History of Pilates
Joseph Pilates invented the practice of Pilates (1883-1967). He developed a system of exercises in the 1920’s which were intended to strengthen the human mind and body. Joseph Pilates believed that both physical and mental health are connected. His interest in physical health and fitness grew after living through a sickly childhood. Joe studied yoga, Zen meditation, martial arts, gymnastics and boxing which all helped him create the unique form of body conditioning, originally known as “Contrology”. He developed his wellness plan while interning in England during the First World War. He claimed Pilates helped him and his fellow internees resist an influenza epidemic.
After the war, Joseph Pilates moved to New York in 1926 and opened up a studio. It wasn’t long before dancers began training with Joe in order to create long, lean muscles and a strong physique. Joe had a fire in his studio in which he tried to save important documents. He fell through the floorboards and hung from a beam until he was rescued. This incident is believed to have directly led to his death in October 1967, at the age of 87, from pneumonia. Today Pilates is used by athletes, people of all ages, soon to be moms and rehabilitation patients as a way to challenge, care and connect with their bodies.
